Governance: Conducted a comprehensive, yearlong review and redesign of all governance processes to enhance the board's ability to provide leadership and to position the agency to meet future challenges. Assisted board of directors in redefining its role, restructuring from 250 members to 30-50 members, and developing more efficient operations. (Client: HIAS [Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society], an international agency that works to rescue, relocate, and resettle refugees and other migrants.)
Governance and Strategic Planning: Conducted two yearlong efforts: an audit and redesign to clarify the board's role and accountabilities, revise operating processes and structure, and improve linkages and communications with stakeholders; and a futures process to develop a shared organizational vision and the strategic framework for achieving it. (Client: YMCA Retirement Fund, which manages a $2.5 billion pension fund and provides retirement benefits and education to staff and retirees at 891 “Y” associations nationwide.)
Mission Clarification and Strategic Planning: Worked with strategic planning team over the course of six months, facilitating meetings and distilling recommendations. The collaboration led to a new mission statement, redefined organizational values, and a five-year plan. (Client: China Institute in America , an organization that promotes understanding of Chinese civilization, culture, and heritage through education and the arts.)
Retreat Facilitation: Designed and facilitated a retreat for board and staff to explore the mission and direction of the organization at a critical point in its history. Gathered extensive background from participants in advance to help focus and guide an exploration of future strategies. (Client: In the Life, a media concern that produces a bimonthly public television program on the history and contemporary experience of the gay and lesbian community.)
Executive Transition: Assisted in designing process for recruiting a new CEO after the departure of a long-tern, founding director. Helped define the ideal candidate's leadership qualities by working with board and staff to clarify organizational vision, direction, and priorities. Advised the search committee on designing and implementing effective procedures for recruitment and a smooth transition. (Client: Planned Parenthood of Louisiana, an affiliate of the nationwide Planned Parenthood movement, which provides reproductive health services, education, and advocacy throughout the state.)
